The pack has been written to be fully in line with the “renewed” Primary National Strategy for Literacy and Mathematics in 2007. All Literacy, Mathematical and Geography activities can be carried out using ICT in communication, data-handling or graphical modelling packages.

The pack covers a wide variety of speaking and listening, reading and writing activities across a number of genres. It is designed to engage the children with an issue before introducing the writing task so that they undertake this with enthusiasm. The project could be completed in a week of focussed cross-curricular Literacy, but could equally form the basis for two to three weeks of more standard Literacy planning. For details of the objectives covered within each unit, please see the lesson plans.
The project could be used as an introduction to or as part of the following QCA Units:
Unit 12: Should the High Street be closed to traffic (substituting your own genuine local issue)
Unit 20: Local traffic – an environmental issue

The programme could help to cover the themes of settlement (6d) and environment (6e). It also has the potential to cover a good number of Geography skills, particularly when it is extended from the imaginary town to engaging with genuine local issues. These include:
